Return that becomes an exchange
Can an AI agent turn a return into an exchange?
Yes, when the reason allows it. The agent asks one diagnostic question: is the issue the fit, or the product itself? Where policy permits a size exchange, it checks live availability, reserves the replacement, issues a prepaid label and ships the same day. The revenue is retained instead of refunded, and the customer is never made to ask for it.

The whole call, unedited.
ScaileAIThanks for calling. What can I do for you?
CallerI need to return a jacket. It doesn't fit.
ScaileAII can do that. Is it too big or too small? If it's just sizing I can swap it rather than refund it.
CallerToo small. I'd take the next size up if you have it.
ScaileAIYou're in luck, the large is in stock. I'll reserve it and send you a prepaid label for the one you have.
CallerDo I have to wait for you to get mine back?
ScaileAINo, I'm shipping the large today. Label's in your email now.
What ScaileAI did
Six things happened on this call.
- Agreed to the return first, so the customer never had to fight for it.
- Asked the one question that separates a fit problem from a product problem.
- Checked live availability before offering the exchange, so the offer was real.
- Reserved the replacement immediately rather than after the return arrived.
- Shipped the new size the same day, which is what makes the exchange feel better than a refund.
- Emailed the prepaid label during the call.
Why it matters
The commercial consequence.
A return call is a refund unless somebody asks a better question. The margin difference between a refund and a size exchange is the entire contribution on the order, and the question that separates them takes four seconds. Two design choices make it work commercially. The replacement ships before the original comes back, which removes the customer’s reason to prefer the refund, and availability is checked before the offer is made, so the agent never proposes an exchange it cannot honour. Neither depends on persuasion, which is why it performs the same on the thousandth call as the first.
