Gas odor, booking abandoned mid-call

What does an AI agent do if a caller describes a possible gas leak?

It stops. The agent abandons the booking flow the moment a safety trigger appears and asks one narrow confirming question. It then instructs the caller to leave the property without touching switches, directs them to the gas utility or 911 from outside, and alerts the on-call supervisor. It does not finish the appointment. It does not attempt to assess whether the smell is really gas.

ScenarioThe call opened as a routine service booking. At second 22 the caller mentioned a smell in the utility room.

ScaileAIThanks for calling Summit. What's going on with the system today?

CallerThe furnace is making a noise and honestly the utility room smells a bit funny.

ScaileAICan you describe the smell — does it smell like rotten eggs or sulphur?

CallerYeah, kind of like that.

ScaileAII'm going to stop booking and deal with this now. Please leave the house, don't touch any switches, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. This is a possible gas leak.

CallerOkay. Okay, going now.

ScaileAIGood. I'm alerting our on-call supervisor too.

What ScaileAI did

Six things happened on this call.

  • Heard a passing remark about a smell and treated it as a trigger rather than as an aside.
  • Asked one specific confirming question, rotten eggs or sulphur, rather than a general one.
  • Announced that it was stopping the booking, so the caller understood the change in priority.
  • Gave three instructions in order: leave, do not touch switches, call from outside.
  • Named the possibility plainly as a gas leak rather than softening it.
  • Alerted the on-call supervisor without waiting for the call to end.

Why it matters

The commercial consequence.

Every operator evaluating voice AI for home services asks a version of this question, and they are right to. Booking the wrong slot is not the risk. The risk is an agent so committed to finishing the booking that it talks past a safety signal to get there. The behavior to look for is abandonment. The agent gives up the commercial objective, out loud, mid-sentence. It also makes no attempt to judge whether the smell is really gas, because that assessment is not its to make and a wrong reassurance is the worst output available to it. Publishing this call is more persuasive than any safety policy, because it shows the system losing a booking on purpose.
